| A Worthy Goal
Do you have a single passion or primary focus in your life… something that inspires and motivates you in everything that you do? Or are you one of those people who loses focus and direction every time the winds change? Our lives can be easily influenced. If you are not careful, your goals and objectives will be set for you by the demands, priorities, and values of other people or worse… by mere circumstances.
It is a common saying that, “You only have one life to live.” There is even a daytime soap opera called “One Life To Live”. Many followers of Christ hold the conviction that life is a gift from God. Add these two ideas together (one life + gift from God) and it should go without saying that we should do our best to live our lives well.
So, how do you decide what to do with the one life God has given you? There are so many options! It has been said, “Aim at nothing and you will hit it every time,” and “People don’t plan to fail, they just fail to plan.” If you don’t set some goals and establish objectives necessary to accomplish those goals, you are not likely to reach those goals! Truth is… we all have goals, even if we have not clearly determined or defined them. And our goals dictate what we do with our time, talents, resources, and energies.
Let’s go back to the original question… what is your single passion or primary focus? What are you daily focused on and seeking to accomplish? I’m not looking for the “right” answer. Be honest with yourself. Think about the things that consumed your thoughts this week.
Were you considering how you might change your friend who does not always live up to your expectations? Or how you might deal with a co-worker who lacks justice and mercy? Maybe your focus was on the new toys you will be able to buy when your tax return comes in from the IRS. Has getting promoted or transferred to a new position at work become your primary objective? Better grades? Deeper relationships? Better health? Maybe your goal is simply to survive each day.
Circumstances can and will distract you from what you should be focused on in life. If you do not pay attention, you will tragically miss God’s purposes and plans for your life. Not only that, but you will also fail to see how the problems and circumstances of life fit into God’s overall purpose for a lost and dying world.
The Bible says of God, “You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast, because he trusts in You.” (Isaiah 26:3)
God’s desire is not that we would be ignorant of the problems and needs of people around us. We have much greater view to see beyond our problems to God and His provision when our passions, desires, and goals are in alignment with His. When our highest priority is the Lord, something amazing happens: God begins to change us and make us into the image of His Son “who for the joy set before Him endured the cross” (Hebrews 12:2). And that is passion!!!
May you seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and may your life be lived in passionate pursuit of Jesus Christ as long as you have breath.
Seize the day!
